Organ Prolapse: Understanding Cystocele, Rectocele, and Urethrocele

According to research, more than 50% of women experience some form of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is the most efficient, non-invasive treatment available, boasting an impressive 80-90% success rate.

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the uterus, bladder, and/or rectum drop from their normal positions due to weakened pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues.

Causes of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

The most common causes of pelvic organ prolapse include:

  • Childbirth
  • Aging
  • Chronic Coughing
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Weak Pelvic Floor Muscles
  • Heavy Lifting
  • Previous Surgeries

Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Patients with POP may experience the following symptoms:

  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Low back pain
  • Discomfort during intercourse
  • Difficulty using personal hygiene products
  • Organ protrusion from the vaginal opening
  • Urinary frequency, incontinence, or difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Fecal incontinence or constipation

What to Expect During Your First Evaluation

At your initial evaluation, your physical therapist will review your medical history and conduct a thorough physical examination. This process aims to identify the causes of your symptoms, including any joint issues, muscle tightness or weakness, or nerve involvement.

The Examination May Include:

  • Pelvic girdle screening
  • Soft tissue assessment
  • Visual inspection of the tissues
  • Reflex testing
  • Sensation testing
  • Internal assessment of pelvic floor muscles

Based on the findings, your therapist may also refer you to a physician to support an interdisciplinary care plan.
